    As a second generation Cane and fanatic - this guy came in after not playing for a while - had huge expectations, even from high school, and delivered. I will always have tremendous respect for this young man. To claw back from where he was to being a potential Day 1 draft pick is something he, himself should be proud of as well. Kid has an enormous amount of raw talent combined with NFL-level rush moves and is extremely competitive.

    Quick other note: The ease with which Darrisaw throws off an NFL-talent (Roche) is unreal. His power is something else. I really thought he was overhyped due to Sewell being so elite... that there was a major drop-off to the OT2. Well, maybe not so fast. I still think Sewell is the most natural OT/LT I've ever seen -- at least since T. Williams and T. Smith. So, I doubt a team would trade due to how dominant Sewell is, relative to even monsters like Darrisaw. Albeit, if the price is right, and I'm a top-five picking GM, that Darrisaw strength is serious. Haven't studied his feet and arc, but he's gotta be the consensus OT2 come draft day. (Hope these two "hot takes," if they can even be called that, hold up.)

      @@MyFootYourFace Go ahead and take him first overall, have the Jets take Fields or trade for sixth-overall plus Wentz (or even Hurts), and have the Birds grab Lawrence. Sounds like a deal to me! Obviously sarcasm. I'm sure you mean for your second first-round pick in the early 20s (23?). Frankly, if I were you, and Darrisaw landed in my lap at 23rd overall, I'd be a little concerned. He has the stature, power, strength and hand-placement. The only question mark is how quickly his kick-step materializes and gains "anchor strength." Not to mention, how quickly he can run the arc. If he puts up average or better times in those categories, he'll be long gone by 23. If he finishes below-average, then I think he'd be there in the 23ish range. HOWEVER, with the amount of first-round talented QBs, WRs and OL writ large, I suppose there's always a chance a road grader like Darrisaw falls into your lap, even with a good performance.
      *How'd he do at Senior Bowl? Was he even eligible/did he attend? Just curious.*

    Two of the biggest "pet peeves" of GMs/front offices when drafting a player with their first pick is 1. Being a "one year wonder" and 2. Having extensive injury history. Unfortunately for Jaelan, the young man has both going against him. HOWEVER, players like him are so rarely available to teams picking in the 20s and 30s, that he will almost certainly be part of the first 40 picks/first-round. His get-off, length, motor, athleticism, agility, power, hand-placement, etc. are just so good I can't see a playoff team -- or even one like the Eagles (with their second pick -- either via trade or second-round pick) -- passing on him. Because you only get Chase Young-esque talents by losing 14-15 games in a season. For the teams that are "too good," how could they pass on this kid? I love Basham in the same range, but the sky is the limit for Mr. Phillips.

    • @tylercarroll4144

      How high of a draft pick do u think jaelan phillips can be in the first round because I understand his injury history but some of those injuries at ucla are just bad luck and then he showed his talent and potential at Miami. I think this kid is just scratching the surface on his potential. His talent alone he should be a 1st rd pick but after his pro day he will probably move up on a lot of draft boards because the edge pass rusher is a huge part of a team just watch the super bowl it's all about the trenches u have to have pass rusher and offensive linemen.

    • @uncletom356
      @uncletom356 3 года назад +2

      @@tylercarroll4144 The fact that you already think of him as a first-round pick means there's likely at least one team who'll "swing for the fences" and simply take on a whole lot of risk, for a ton of (potential) reward. Frankly, I think it comes down to the QBs. Lawrence is gonna go first. Obvious. Fields, Wilson and Lance will be first-round picks. Also, relatively obvious. Other "slam-dunk" first-round picks? Sewell, Smith, Chase, Parsons, Pitts, Surtain, Farley, Slater, Waddle, Darrisaw, JOK, AVT (think it's safe for those last two), Barmore, and at least one of the three OL of: Mayfield, Leatherwood, Davis. The only RB I could see being a first-round pick is Etienne; maybe Harris too -- but it'd be a minor surprise. Then, we have to circle back to the QB who could be the first-round wildcard: Mac Jones. We also need to keep in mind the lesser known possible first-round WRs in Moore, Bateman and Toney. Lastly, we need to address the EDGEs that'll go before Phillips. Ones who have less "baggage" (for lack of a better term) and just as high of ceiling, if not much higher: Those names, in my opinion, would be Kwity Paye, Greg Rousseau and Jayson Oweh. That's just the 4-3 EDGEs (I.e., defensive ends). We can't forget about the 3-4 OLB EDGEs in Zaven Collins, Joseph Ossai and Azeez Ojulari. Furthermore, there are first-round talents on the margins a la Moerig, Marshall, and one or two "surprises" -- there are always a few. By my count, if we put Phillips right behind all those named above, he'd be in "Slot 35ish." It's why I wanted to emphasize being in the Top 40 for a litany of reasons. I don't see how he escapes the first forty picks.
      Why is Mac Jones so important to this equation? The same reason the Eagles after winning Super Bowl 52 traded out of the 32nd spot for two second-round picks in return for the Ravens to move in and take Lamar. I actually think Jones goes significantly higher than Lamar -- some reasons are rational and understandable; other reasons given, it's quite dubious. But I digress. Anyway, the reason that 32nd slot is so important for QBs, especially, is it guarantees them a fifth-year option that all other rounds/picks simply don't have. So, let's say Kyle Trask or QB X immediately rated behind Jones is sitting on the board after Mac Jones is taken with the 25th pick (pure guess -- don't even know the team picking). Well, then another team could value that 32nd spot quite highly. Ipso facto, if Phillips is "only drafted" 33rd-40th, while it wouldn't technically be a "first-round pick," it would actually be one for all intents and purposes. Not only for all the reasons laid out above, but also because of how insanely talented the first 60-75 picks are in this draft.
      TLDR version/"Long story short" version: Elite EDGEs with his size, length, production and explosiveness are utterly rare. Frankly, as much of a copout as this may seem, I think the Combine could really help him. Doubt it can hurt him much. My "ceiling" of his draft stock would be in the early 20s -- I just don't see Jaelan going within the teens or above. My "floor" would be 40 -- or at the very, very latest, the early 40s.
      What is utterly undeniable is if a team needs EDGE, WR, QB or OL talent, this is the draft for you. I'd add "CB" to that, as well, but in reality, I'm only "in love" with five-ish, and all project to go within that same Top 40ish range. Hope that answered your question. It's a long and thorough response, but could be seen as being verbose. Apologies if it's the lattermost.
      *For "fun's" sake, I'll guess the two earliest spots he'd go would be either at 20th or 24th overall. The latest -- within the "most likely perimeters" would be in the 37-41 range. Taking the median of both those ranges, it's 22nd on the "high end" and 39th on the "low end." Taking the median one last time, my "officially unofficial" prediction would be... 30th-31st. Again, right at the cusp of being a "true" first-rounder. But again, don't forget about the QB factor, too.*

    • @uncletom356
      @uncletom356 3 года назад

      Quick addendum: If one took out some of my OL/RB "hunches," it'd take the median right at that 27th spot, where the Ravens are selecting. Who the hell knows, especially this early, but there are people on this channel clamoring for him to be BAL's section. I don't see him as a Baltimore type of first-round pick in the "philosophical sense" -- mainly due to injuries. Why would be be the quintessential BA pick? Because they're good-to-great every year, and know guys like Myles Garrett and Chase Young will never be Ravens due to how many games Harbaugh/Lamar would lose in a single year. And if he's seen as the highest upside by a great scouting team, 27th overall could make a lot of sense. *But it's waaaaaay too early-on in the process. We don't even have official measurements for these players yet, let alone official testing/Combine times, etc.*

      It's just hard to know if this is the Jaelan who'll be balling for NFL franchises year-in and year-out. It's why Basham has such a strong following, and could (likely) be selected over Phillips. However, as we've touched on, as much as I truly love Basham in a 4-3, the sky is the limit for Phillips. Even Basham has SOME physical limitations.

    Just some scouting thoughts, thinking out loud here. He has heavy legs which means a lack of stop and go speed. He showed problems in the video getting his hands on some of the nifty speed guys because of this. His feet have a choppiness to them because of the "heavy legs". Not a positive, especially at the NFL level where QBs can be incredibly elusive. He has issues bringing guys down on tackles. He tries using way too much upper body to bring guys down. Wrap them at the hip and lasso the feet like a cowboy.
